In October–November 2002, a salvage excavation was conducted on He- H aruv Street in T irat Karmel (License No. B-258/2002; map ref. 198150/740820; Fig. 1), prior to the construction of a road in a new neighborhood development. The excavation, on behalf of the Zinman Institute of Archaeology at the University of Haifa, in cooperation with the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by the Ministry of Construction and Housing, was directed by M. Eisenberg (photography, metal detection and plans) and I. Groman-Yaroslavsky, with the assistance of E. Bisharat (area supervision), A. Tsatskin (geoarchaeology), M. Ralbag (surveying and drafting), A. Berman (numismatics; see appendix), G. Amzaleg (metal laboratory) and A. Segal and A. Boas (scientific guidance). My thanks are due to D. Lipkunsky, who shared with me the unpublished 1997 report of his excavations at the site.
