Navigating the GenAI frontier: The role of the CISO in GenAI governance

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) have rapidly evolved, becoming integral parts of modern enterprises. The exponential growth of generative AI (GenAI), spearheaded by organisations such as OpenAI, has introduced both remarkable opportunities and significant challenges. This paper explores the critical role of the chief information security officer (CISO) in navigating GenAI governance, highlighting the importance of responsible GenAI framework development, ethical use and regulatory compliance. It also lays some groundwork on the history of GenAI and the types of GenAI that the CISO may encounter.
