In order to understand the dispersal of fonds in Archival Science, this article considers, in the Brazilian context, the fragmentation of personal archives by the phenomenon of shared custody by more than one institution. Using a review of the Archival Science literature as its methodology, it characterises conceptual aspects of personal archives, their dispersal as a canonical theme in Archival Science and examines the phenomenon of the fragmentation of personal archives in Brazil.
