Inflation is one of the main challenges for the contemporary Bangladesh economy. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), consumer price index (CPI) based inflation was recorded at above 9 percent throughout the second half of FY24. Addressing persistent inflation requires the necessity for conducting an analysis to identify the key drivers of inflation in Bangladesh. This paper aims to explore the key drivers of inflation in the economy of Bangladesh from FY 2014 to FY 2024. The data has been collected from the Statistics and Research Department of Bangladesh Bank. It employs a vector error correction model (VECM) to assess the short-run dynamics and long-run equilibrium relationship among the variables. Findings from the VECM approach demonstrated that the variables are co-integrated in the long run. Moreover, broad money supply, energy prices, and exchange rates had a significant impact on inflation in Bangladesh over the short and long run. Precisely, a 1% rise in the broad money supply, energy prices, and exchange rate (i.e., depreciation) will drive inflation in Bangladesh by 40%, 22%, and 18%, respectively, in the long run. Finally, the policy implications of the study propose that accommodative monetary policy in coordination with fiscal policy and initiatives against some non-economic factors like syndicates, hoarding, etc. is required to curb inflation in Bangladesh.
