Rhetorical Ornament in the Hadithes of Sahih Al-Bukhari: A Review

Abstract

Among the great personalities who enriched the knowledge of Hadith, Imam Bukhari (RA) was one of them. During the third century of the Islamic Hijra calendar, several Hadith scholars made relentless efforts to perfect the science of Hadith. Among them, Imam Bukhari (RA) was one of the most notable. During this period, he compiled the world-renowned Hadith collection Al-Jami' al-Sahih, commonly known as Sahih Al-Bukhari.The language of the Prophet (SM) was simple, eloquent, and concise. He never spoke unnecessarily and conveyed deep meanings with very few words. His speech was adorned with beautiful rhetoric. Therefore, the analysis of the ornamentation of the Hadith is a highly important and necessary subject. The way of expressing a thought in various forms according to the demands of the situation is called 'Ilm al-Bayan. Arabic rhetoric has specific principles, such as 'Tashbih' (simile), 'Majaz' (Allegory), and 'Kinayah' (metonymy). In this essay, we will attempt to analyze the rhetoric of Hadith by identifying these significant principles and examining their usage in the Hadith of Sahihul Bukhari.
