Eficiencia de los procesos de tratamiento primario, secundario y terciario en la eliminación de contaminantes prioritarios en aguas residuales

Abstract

La gestión de las aguas residuales enfrenta el reto creciente de eliminar no solo la carga orgánica y los sólidos convencionales, sino también contaminantes prioritarios como fármacos, pesticidas, metales pesados y disruptores endocrinos, cuya presencia compromete la salud ambiental y humana. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la eficiencia de los procesos de tratamiento primario, secundario y terciario en la remoción de estos contaminantes, a través de una revisión bibliográfica sistemática. Se realizó una búsqueda en Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, PubMed y SciELO, aplicando criterios de inclusión que consideraron estudios publicados entre 2015 y 2025, con datos de eficiencia claramente diferenciados por etapa de tratamiento. De 285 registros iniciales, 21 artículos fueron seleccionados para la síntesis cualitativa. Los resultados muestran que los tratamientos primarios poseen un papel limitado frente a contaminantes prioritarios, mientras que los secundarios mejoran la remoción de materia orgánica y algunos nutrientes, aunque con variabilidad según la tecnología y condiciones operativas. Los procesos terciarios, especialmente la oxidación avanzada, la adsorción y las membranas, alcanzan eficiencias superiores al 90 % para diversos microcontaminantes. Se concluye que la integración de sistemas híbridos y tecnologías avanzadas, junto con políticas de inversión y fortalecimiento técnico, es esencial para optimizar el tratamiento de aguas residuales y mitigar los impactos de los contaminantes prioritarios.
