Vermicomposta: una alternativa sustentable con beneficios para la acuacultura

Abstract

Lo que para muchos es considerado un residuo, para las lombrices de tierra representa una fuente de alimento. Estos organismos son hábiles para transformar los residuos orgánicos en productos de gran valor nutritivo mediante un proceso denominado vermicompostaje, resultado de la interacción entre distintas especies de anélidos (lombrices) y su microbiota asociada. La materia orgánica procesada en el intestino de la lombriz es excretada como vermicomposta, un material con apariencia y olor igual que la tierra negra comercial, libre de patógenos y caracterizado por su alto contenido de macro y micronutrientes, vitaminas, enzimas, hormonas y microorganismos benéficos. Gracias a estas propiedades, la vermicomposta se ha empleado como un biofertilizante tanto en agricultura como en acuacultura. A diferencia de los fertilizantes químicos comerciales, la vermicomposta no genera efectos negativos sobre los sistemas de cultivo, ya que los nutrientes se encuentran de forma asimilable por las plantas y el plancton, resultado del proceso biológico de las lombrices sobre la materia orgánica. El presente articulo revisa estudios que evalúan el uso de la vermicomposta como fertilizante orgánico en el cultivo de especies acuícolas de importancia comercial, enfatizando beneficios sobre la productividad primaria y crecimiento de los organismos cultivados
