Son indudables e indiscutibles los beneficios de la actividad física sobre la salud. Sin embargo, ciertos deportes en particular se han cubierto por un manto de sospecha debido al uso de sustancias ergogénicas, poniendo en duda el mérito y talento deportivo. La facilidad en su obtención y el marketing industrial han hecho de esto un negocio de magnitud intangible para el común popular. Con el objetivo de mejorar el rendimiento, incrementar la masa muscular o bajar de peso, se recurre a estas sustancias cuyo efecto no está siempre probado y puede ser perjudicial para la salud. Deportistas de elite, amateurs y más aún jóvenes no deportistas hacen un mal uso, por desconocimiento, falta de apoyo profesional y la fácil obtención en el mercado. Esta toma de posición resumirá los efectos de las sustancias más utilizadas en la práctica deportiva, haciendo énfasis en la repercusión a nivel cardiovascular.
