Abstract

Al hablar de acidez estomacal o pirosis nos referimos a la sensación molesta, incluso dolorosa, de ardor retroesternal o sensación de quemazón que asciende hacia cuello y garganta. Se puede acompañar de regurgitación de contenido gástrico o de líquido de sabor ácido o agrio en la boca. Este proceso ocurre cuando se deteriora la función barrera de la zona esofagogástrica. Se considera que la prevalencia de pirosis en la población general es superior al 30 %. El tiempo de exposición ácida supone el patrón oro para el diagnóstico y se entiende como positivo si supera el 6 % del tiempo total del estudio en mediciones prolongadas. Aunque los inhibidores de la bomba de protones continúan siendo el tratamiento de elección, estudios con los bloqueadores ácidos competitivos de potasio han arrojado resultados esperanzadores, ya que han demostrado gran eficacia en la supresión de la secreción ácida del estómago.
