Descubriendo al Faraday químico, el hombre que aisló el benceno

Abstract

Michael Faraday es uno de los científicos más notables e influyentes de la historia, conocido sobre todo por sus magníficas contribuciones al desarrollo del electromagnetismo y la electroquímica. Sus principales descubrimientos incluyen la inducción electromagnética, el diamagnetismo y la electrólisis, y todos los estudiantes de ciencias saben lo son la “Ley de Faraday”, el “efecto Faraday” o la “Jaula de Faraday”. Sin embargo, sus aportaciones a la Química han quedado ligeramente desplazadas a un segundo plano, por lo que, en el 200 aniversario de uno de sus principales descubrimientos, el benceno, es de rigor dedicar este artículo a reflejar algunas de ellas, detallando el riguroso trabajo que realizó para obtener, reconocer, aislar y caracterizar una sustancia tan extraordinaria.
