Tortuga marina (Caretta caretta)

Abstract

La tortuga marina o tortuga boba (Caretta caretta) es un reptil marino de la familia Cheloniidae. Tiene un tamaño mediano, con un caparazón que puede superar el metro de longitud (longitud máxima de caparazón de 120 cm) y los 200 kg de peso. Tiene una cabeza grande con un pico y un cuello muy robustos. Presenta una coloración dorsal marrón con bordes rojos o anaranjados, y el vientre es blancuzco con tonalidades de color amarillo pálido. Las crías presentan tonalidades de color gris oscuro. Tiene un pico queratinizado con los bordes lisos. Las aletas delanteras y las extremidades posteriores, en forma de timón, presentan dos formaciones espinosas (púas o uñas). El caparazón tiene forma de corazón aplanado, con una anchura de aproximadamente el 76 % de su longitud. El caparazón dorsal presenta cinco pares de placas laterales (Figura 1) y 3 pares de placas inframarginales sobre el plastrón.
