Biodegradación de bolsas plásticas, compatibilidad y toxicidad

Abstract

La contaminación causada por las bolsas de plástico (BP) y otros plásticos se ha transformado en uno de los desafíos ambientales más apremiantes de esta época. La fabricación y quema de plástico tiene un gran impacto en el cambio climático. Además, las BP en realidad no desintegran, biodegradan o compostean; solo se fragmentan. Con el tiempo, la luz solar y la elevación de la temperatura descomponen lentamente el plástico en pedazos muy pequeños hasta quedar en microplásticos. Las BP que más contaminan son las provenientes de hidrocarburos, ya que representan el 50 % de la producción anual, seguidas en la actualidad por las bolsas de un solo uso. Los BP desechables (de un solo uso) son productos que contienen resinas biodegradables como son el almidón de maíz, trigo, papa, nopal u otra harina, y se destruyen inmediatamente después de su uso (normalmente en plantas de composta). El plástico se utiliza más comúnmente en el transporte y en la industria de alimentos, medicina, residuos y otros. Además, a menudo no son aceptados en los centros de reciclaje al no tener la composición para poder ser reciclables (Lindwall, 2024).
