Dermatoglifia e o processo de envelhecimento: uma revisão integrativa

Abstract

Technological advances in the field of health sciences have been significant, and therefore, it is essential to investigate the potential of these devices when associated with the prevention, identification, treatment, or monitoring of pathological processes and their relationship with the aging process. The objective was to review the concepts in the scientific literature on the relationship between dermatoglyphics and the aging process. This is an integrative review, which asked: What has been discussed about dermatoglyphics and the aging process in the national and international scientific literature? The search took place in August and September 2022. The English expressions used, according to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), were: “dermatoglyphics” and “elderly” in the SCIELO, Cochrane Library, PubMed, BVS, and CAPES Periodicals databases, and the selection was made using Rayyan software. Elderly people are considered challenging for dermatoglyphics, as the aging process distorts the reading of fingerprints. Although dermatoglyphics is a possible tool for identifying predispositions to certain pathologies, it is not considered an independent diagnostic method. It can be concluded that research on the link between dermatoglyphics and the aging process is still in its infancy, and therefore there is a significant gap in knowledge on this subject. It is necessary to promote research that correlates these topics in order to broaden the discussion and, in the future, recognize dermatoglyphics as a diagnostic tool for pathologies or syndromes, capable of promoting the life expectancy of individuals in the aging process through health education interventions.
