Abstract

Dado el incremento exponencial en la producción mundial de plásticos y el impacto ambiental que estos están causando por su desacertada disposición, es apremiante explorar opciones ecoamigables. Los polihidroxialcanoatos (PHA) son un tipo de bioplástico de origen microbiano termoestable que pueden adoptar diferentes formas estructurales, representando una alternativa potencial frente a los polímeros derivados del petróleo. Dado que su producción se da por medio de microorganismos, tanto investigadores como industrias están a la vanguardia de encontrar combinaciones de sustratos y condiciones que optimicen y potencialicen su producción. Se encontró que los residuos tanto físicos como líquidos podrían representar un potencial sustrato como fuente de carbono, además de reintegrar desechos a una nueva cadena de producción. Dentro de los posibles tipos de cultivos se destacan los mixtos al presentar importantes resultados y ser menos exigentes en las condiciones de desarrollo. Pese a que los cultivos puros pueden presentar mayores tasas de síntesis de PHA, estas resultan más costosas. Se han explorado diferentes tipos de sustratos como papel de oficina, hidrolizado de madera, aceite de origen vegetal como jatrofa, suero de queso, entre otros. Así mismo se han explorado tipos de bacterias, arqueas, hongos y microalgas para la producción de PHA.
