Abstract

RESUMEN: El desarrollo de las tecnologias de captura y almacenamiento de carbono (CAC) ha sido impulsado por los organismos nacionales e internacionales por la necesidad de mitigar el cambio climatico resultante del desarrollo economico. La implantacion de tecnologias CAC puede ser una contribucion esencial al esfuerzo de reduccion global de GEI, producto de emision de CO2 en la industria y plantas de generacion electrica que utilizan combustibles fosiles. Hay industrias, como acerias y cementeras, donde la CAC es la unica solucion para lograr una reduccion substancial de emisiones de CO2. La mayoria de las tecnologias que son necesarias para la implantacion de la CAC estan siendo utilizadas en variedad de industrias, pero no se aplican todavia a escala comercial en generacion electrica. La tecnologia CAC tiene un rol fundamental en la cartera de tecnologias para la reduccion de emisiones. El IEA (International Energy Agency) ha desarrollado diferentes escenarios que examinan varios caminos para lograr reducciones de emisiones. Fundamentalmente, los cambios requeridos para reducir las emisiones de CO2 a la mitad para 2050 se reducen a tres estrategias, crear un sistema de energia mas flexible y descentralizado, mejorar la eficiencia energetica, transformar la generacion de energia electrica. Los sectores publico y privado deben aceptar la necesidad de inversiones adicionales y el retiro temprano de instalaciones inadecuadas, para acelerar el proceso y reducir las emisiones, especialmente en centrales de energia y en equipos. El cambio tecnologico requerido mas importante es la descarbonizacion del sistema electrico en el 2050. Todavia no existe consenso sobre cual de las tecnologias de Captura de CO2 es la mas eficaz. Lo que si parece claro es en que un futuro cercano sera necesario utilizar alguna de estas tecnologias para contribuir a la no emision de gases de efecto invernadero
