Abstract

La mayoría de los libros que llevan el término esclavitud en su título se ocupa de instituciones, de economías o de aspectos legales y estructuras. Casi todos reproducen, consciente o inconscientemente, las perspectivas de los esclavizadores o las de una sociedad esclavista determinada. Esto ya significa mucho, porque muchas sociedades de lo que hoy denominamos “Occidente” o “Norte”, que tienen cómo base el capitalismo liberal, les cuesta mucho trabajo reconocer que el fundamento de su desarrollo histórico ha sido un sistema de pura explotación de seres humanos, de comercio de esas personas y de enriquecimiento (acumulación de capital) a base de violencia e insoportables trabajos forzados (sobre todo en las economías de exportación de commodities, es decir, en los más capitalistas), junto con mecanismos de minimización del estatus de los propios esclavizados.1 Los actores inmediatos en un sistema esclavista son los esclavizadores (propietarios, comerciantes de esclavos y el personal a su cargo –factores, médicos/curanderos, grumetes/remeros, administradores, mayorales, cargos/ consignatarios, guardias, capitanes y tripulaciones–), y los esclavizados (hombres, mujeres y niños). Claro que estos últimos son cuantitativamente mucho, muchísimo más, que los primeros. De esta forma, la mayoría de las historias que existen sobre la esclavitud representan, bajo la perspectiva de la institución, sólo la parte más pequeña de los actores vinculados con ella.
