Arte transicional para el Capitaloceno

Transitional art for the Capitalocene
Authors: Nuria Sánchez León;

Arte transicional para el Capitaloceno

Abstract

The study will embrace the concept of Capitalocene (J. Moore, 2015), to encompass not only the question of overexploitation of the physical world, but also the existence of power structures and groups that mark the historical and cultural construction responsible for overcoming the limits of the planet. The environmental crisis, led by climate change and the loss of biodiversity along with the end of fossil fuels, are the greatest challenges of our time. It is a crisis of our livelihoods, as well as our culture, worldview and the construction of knowledge. It requires the attention of all disciplines, sectors and agents, including the humanities, and specifically, art. This article focuses on studying one of the most recent artistic manifestations —transitional art— born in the United Kingdom (Neal, 2015) and related to the Transition Town Movement (TTM). Through a case study in Spain and the United Kingdom we seek to identify what type of art corresponds to the challenges of the Capitalocene, to later verify what characteristics of transitional art are appropriate to our time and finally to know if transitional art can respond to this global challenge.
