La exposición del urbanismo, si ya lo situamos como base de compren-sión histórica, es de gran complejidad si nos limitamos a la exposición del urbanismo de la Antigüedad Clásica. Se impone una primera consideración: se trata de saber cómo eran materialmente las ciudades, cómo eran sus cuadros gobernantes y sus servicios públicos, sus monumentos, sus obras públicas, sus calles, sus jardines, sus casas, sus ínsulas, cuáles eran las normas que regían su desarrollo urbano.
