Limitaciones del índice de masa corporal en individuos fisicamente activos con mayor desarrollo muscular

Abstract

Introducción: El índice de masa corporal (IMC) es un indicador antropométrico ampliamente utlizado; sin embargo, en poblaciones físicamente activas puede presenta limitaciones severas al no diferencias entre la masa muscular y el tejido adiposo. Por ello, el objetivo del estudio fue analizar las limitaciones del IMC como indicador de adiposidad en deportistas con mayor desarrollo muscular. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, correlacional y transversal en 52 basquetbolistas pertenecientes a distintos clubes deportivos. La selección se efectuó mediante un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia. Se evaluaron peso corporal, talla, IMC y porcentaje de masa muscular mediante bioimpedancia eléctrica InBody en condiciones de ayuno estandarizadas. El análisis estadístico se ejecutó con GraphPad Prism versión 8.0, utilizando el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson. Resultados: Se observó una correlación positiva estadísticamente significativa moderada-fuerte entre el IMC y el porcentaje de masa muscular (r=0.575; p=0.001), demostrando un incremento del IMC puede relacionarse directamente con la hipertrofia muscular y no con el aumento del tejido adiposo. Discusión: Los hallazgos confirman que el IMC de forma aislada clasficia erróneamente con sobrepeso y obesidad a los deportistas por procesos de hipertrofia muscular. Por ello, la evaluación nutricional deportiva requiere métodos más completos capaces de distinguir entre la masa grasa y la masa muscular. Conclusiones: El IMC no debe considerarse como único criterio para valorar la composición corporal en deportistas, ya que actúa como estimado de densidad corporal total que sobreestimacion la adiposidad en atletas. Resulta indispensable implementar protocolos de evaluación que discriminen los componentes tisulares de manera objetiva e individualizada.
