The usage of adobe as filling and sustainable material in construction of traditional houses of Safranbolu

Abstract

Purpose: One of the principles of SDG is: "Making cities safe and sustainable means ensuring access to safe and affordable housing, upgrading slum settlements, investing in public transport, creating green spaces, and improving urban planning and management in a participatory and inclusive way". Since the first ages of mankind nearly passed to a settled life, in many locations in Turkey and in the world, Constructions with timber frame and adobe (mud brick) buildings met basic life needs of people like safe -keeping and sheltering. Along the next periods, by using stone materials some heightened and cutted their direct connection with the floor those buildings still have been used and continued to be built nowadays. Recently, the irreplaceable consumption of the natural environment and energy resources and the alienation of artificial environments to humans and nature have necessitated new approaches to the understanding of architectural design. Proposing these approaches for their intended purpose and discovering the right solutions is only possible by understanding the material use and techniques of exemplary buildings built in history.
