Abstract

Desde el primer estudio publicado por Sidman en 1971, y su posterior sistematización una década después, el fenómeno de la formación de clases de equivalencia ha demostrado ser una línea de trabajo altamente fructífera, tanto en el campo de la investigación básica como en el de la aplicada. A pesar de la enorme generalización que ha demostrado este fenómeno, tanto en características de los sujetos como en procedimientos de entrenamiento, su naturaleza es una cuestión sobre la que aún, más de cuarenta años después, no existe un amplio consenso. A lo largo de este tiempo se han desarrollado diferentes teorías explicativas, pero el auge que ha ido experimentando en los últimos veinte años la investigación sobre el lenguaje desde un punto de vista analítico-conductual ha contribuido a que se fortalezca la consideración de la conducta verbal como elemento necesario para la aparición de las relaciones derivadas que definen las clases de equivalencia. En el presente trabajo se revisan algunos de los hallazgos experimentales más relevantes que apoyan o rechazan dicha aproximación como argumento para defender que la etiqueta “clases de equivalencia” puede estar aplicándose a conductas que no son funcionalmente equiparables.
