Una lista anotada de las aves de la isla Malpelo

Abstract

La avifauna de Malpelo ha sido poco estudiada porque la Isla es remota, de difícil acceso y estuvo deshabitada hasta 1986. Pese a que existen registros de aves publicados desde finales del siglo XIX, casi todos los estudios han consistido en anotaciones esporádicas sobre la fauna terrestre. Entre finales del año 2003 y finales del 2006 realizamos once visitas para hacer observaciones intensivas de todas las especies de aves presentes, recorriendo por tierra y agua buena parte de la isla principal y de los islotes aledaños. Como complemento a nuestras observaciones hicimos una recopilación de todos los registros de aves, publicados e inéditos, logrando un listado total de 60 especies. Para 52 especies presentamos nueva información que consiste en: nuevas observaciones sobre la reproducción de siete especies (Sula dactylatra, S. granti, S. sula, Creagrus furcatus, Anous stolidus, A. minutus y Gygis alba), nueva evidencia a favor de la reproducción de tres especies (Phaethon aethereus, Fregata magnificens y F. minor), 22 primeros registros, y 16 especies para las cuales es Malpelo una parada en sus rutas migratorias, hasta ahora desconocida. Aunque Malpelo soporta una comunidad de aves predominantemente marina, con la colonia de anidación más grande de Colombia y el único sitio conocido de anidación en el País para S. granti, C. furcatus, A. minutus y G. alba, son frecuentes también las especies playeras y terrestres durante sus épocas de migración. Esperamos que el número de especies de aves siga en aumento conforme se intensifiquen las observaciones, en particular para el caso de aves terrestres y playeras.
