Abstract

The general purpose of this research is to present the evolution of the female image through a selection of fifteen pictorial ex-votos belonging to several Mexican collections. The temporal outline embraces a very early 16th-century piece of El Batán Collection up to another one from the 80s in the 20th century, this one taken form the pictorial ex-votos in the The Lord of Villaseca Shrine in Guanajuato. Another of the specific objectives turns around a revision of the female image in her traditional role as mirrowed in the pictorial votive pictures between the 18thand 19th centuries, although it’s worth pointing out that in some of the pictorials from the 20th century the changes that women experienced along the century were already visible, and most of the ex-votos come precisely from this century.
