Abstract

Peatlands play an important role in freshwater storage, carbon accumulation and biodiversity conservation, among other ecosystem services. However, our knowledge about them is scarce, especially in southern South America, where these ecosystems are being highly threatened. Environmental problems generated by peat and Sphagnum extraction in Isla Grande de Chiloé (Chile) are discussed in this paper. An overview about these ecosystems and their features in Chiloé and Chile is provided.
