
The philosophy of art does not tell anyone how to be an artist. Nor even how to be an appreciator. It does attempt to describe something of the relations with them which every work of art has. For as it happens the philosophy of art is an art, not a science; and not one of the fine arts, either, but only a technique for estimating what is retained, what is assumed, what is implied, what is ahead, in the way of methodological considerations.
