Safety Management System (SMS) applied to the NDT

Abstract

This paper presents a structured approach to the application of a Safety Management System (SMS) within Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), with particular emphasis on risk assessment and risk mitigation in Penetrant Testing (PT) and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) processes. The study focuses on integrating the four SMS pillars—safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion—into NDT operations to enhance process reliability and ensure product integrity. Particular attention is given to the distinction between system-level and process-level SMS applications, highlighting their complementary roles and practical implementation within PT and MT activities. By transitioning from a reactive approach to a proactive, risk-based methodology, NDT organizations can significantly reduce nonconformances (NCRs), improve process stability, and achieve stronger compliance with stringent aerospace quality standards.
