Mia Flores lives in rural Joshua Tree, California, with her immigrant father. When she is sixteen, her father is forced to find alternative work and secures summer housing for Mia with an All- American family in Bend, Oregon. In a small, unsuspecting town, Mia is forced to explore her preconceived notions about how the better half lives under the pressing thumb of her changing adolescence. While the summer passes, she meets two fellow friends, Arlynn and Jean, who help her understand what it takes to grow up and escape the landscape of their failing American ideals.
