Space geodesy in the face of the climate emergency

Abstract

GNSS receivers are small devices used by humans to receive signals from different satellites orbiting the earth. These small jewels that owe their functioning only to, rare natural resources such as: rare metals, copper, ceramic glasses, precious materials etc ..... are not without consequences for man and his environment.With the arrival of the Chinese on the global spacecraft market, everyone receives a signal, whether through a mobile phone, a geodetic GNSS receiver or another connected device, everyone enjoys the benefits of science and the work of these brave astronauts, engineer and geodesian. But is there an environmental and social impact study on all permanent stations installed on earth.Here in Africa there is a lot of vegetation, to carry out some work in areas with a large vegetation cover, you have to cut the trees. The earth currently has enough data to exploit thanks to satellites in orbit. My experience with the Copernicus Maritime Service has allowed me to understand that the European Union holds a large amount of data to allow our planet to survive. But where are these machines that helped collect this data now?Earth observation missions should multiply in a much more innovative way, taking into account the well-being of the earth and its inhabitants.Coming from a small African country and a geodesy engineer by training, the practice of this science in my country is still in its infancy.Understanding the dynamics of Earth and different missions that lead to the positioning of a satellite for me remains a priority.
