Asphaltites are solid hydrocarbons, typically black, with a matte or shiny with an average calorific value of 4500 kcal/kg. Asphaltites are suitable for electricity generation; however, due to their high ash and sulfur content, they are not ideal for domestic use. Minerals and by-products, such as synthetic oil, ammonia, and H2S can be obtained from asphaltites. This mineral is a rare yet new energy source, especially for Turkey, where it has significant reserves available (82 million tons). The thermal power plant in the Silopi district of Turkey serves as a new technology trial for asphalted-based energy production (Fluidized-Bed Combustion or FBC technology). This chapter provides important data for future potential energy assessment opportunities and has innovative content for the industry.
