This article analyzes the differences between human literary artistic works and those generated by AI programs like Chat GPT. While interesting as a technology, could AI ever be said to generate a work of art or literature? This paper differentiates AI generated writing from human generated writing by appeal to humans’ evolved sociability, especially the human capacity for joint intentionality. The blurry nature of authorship and text becomes more clear by examination through Charles Peirce’s semiotic system, especially his notions of the rheme and dicisign. It furthers this point through examining the Umwelt of institutional facts and sacredness in esthetic texts.
