In this article, I compare the representations of magicians in the Gesta Danorum of Saxo Grammaticus and the Heimskringla of Snorri Sturluson. My analysis of these two texts shows that beyond superficial similarities, the representations of magicians in Saxo and Snorri stem from radically different conceptions of magic. Saxo envisions magicians as illusionists who deceive mortals to enhance their dominance, while Snorri portrays them as guardians of dangerous knowledge, enabling the spread of chaos within their societies.
