Abstract

Introducción. La neumonía es un padecimiento agudo que se presenta en el parénquima pulmonar, en el cual existe sustitución del espacio aéreo por células, producto del proceso inflamatorio que se acompaña de datos clínicos como tos y datos de dificultad respiratoria, así como de ciertos hallazgos radiográficos. Método. El estudio inició el 29 de noviembre del 99 al 15 de mayo de 2000 y comprendió un grupo de estudio formado por 51 pacientes y otro de control formado por 20 pacientes, a los cuales se les tomó muestra para hemocultivo una vez que arribaron a Urgencias y previo al inicio de los antibióticos. Operativamente, se definió sensibilidad como el porcentaje de pacientes enfermos con prueba positiva; y especificidad: pacientes sanos con prueba negativa. Se aplicó estadística descriptiva y se utilizó la prueba de 2 para explorar la significancia estadística. Resultados. La sensibilidad y especificidad del hemocultivo como factor predictivo de bacteremia en pacientes con neumonía es de 92% y 33%, respectivamente. Conclusiones. El hemocultivo es sensible más no específico como factor predictivo de bacteremia en pacientes con neumonía
