Comparisons on the Mechanics of Six-wheeled Drive and Four-wheeled Drive Prime Mover

Abstract

An initial attempt was made to investigate the possibility of designing and developing a multipurpose, all terrain six-wheeled prime mover for the oil palm plantation in Malaysia. Comparisons were made on the mechanics of the six-wheeled drive with the commonly used four-wheeled drive prime mover in varied stimulated terrain conditions. AutoCAD 2000 software was used to develop the design concept of the multipurpose, all terrain prime six-wheeled drive prime mover and its implement attachments. The prime mover had a single chassis with skid steer drive wheels, oscillating drive axles, and low ground traction tyres. The equipped 66.32 kW water-cooled, diesel engine was sufficient to run an hydrostatic main pump at a working pressure of 220 bar and a flow rate of 91 L per minute under two drive speeds (i.e, high and low) and two drive modes (1.e. forward and reverse). Proper prime mover wheelbase and proper ground clearance height were employed to give better stability and manoeuvrability for the typical oil palm plantation terrain in Malaysia. Mounting provisions for the seedling transplanting, fertiliser applicator and the infield fruit collector-transporter were made on the prime mover. The respective implement attachments had been designed to have a payload capacity of 20 seedlings for field transplanting of palm seedlings, 600 kg load for crop fertilising, and 1500 kg load for the infield fruit collecting-transporting. Keywords: Prime mover, vehicle mechanics, vehicle mobility, mechanisation, six-wheeled drive, four-wheeled drive.
