La incapacidad temporal (IT) es un derecho de las personas trabajadoras y prescribirla forma parte del tratamiento de muchos problemas de salud. En España, pese a un absentismo laboral similar a la media europea, se va imponiendo una visión economicista de la IT, lo que lleva a valorar solo los costes. La autojustificación de IT breves (hasta 3-5 días) sería una medida desmedicalizadora y desburocratizadora. Ante IT que se alargan de forma innecesaria, se deberían agilizar listas de espera sanitarias, valoraciones independientes por inspección y buscar adaptaciones del lugar de trabajo. Deben establecerse mecanismos simples de denuncia para proteger a las personas trabajadoras del presentismo por presiones. Para evitar el frecuente rechazo de contingencias laborales por parte de las mutuas, debería prevalecer el criterio del médico de familia.
