La poesía de Juan Valera no ocupa un espacio predominante en los estudios literarios, sin embargo, es fundamental para comprender su obra literaria. En el trabajo que sigue se analiza la poética de Valera y, en concreto, el pensamiento neoplatónico que la configura, atendiendo a tres aspectos: el significado de «poeta» y «poesía» desde la lógica del neoplatonismo, la tradición filosófico-poética que opera en los versos de Valera (desde Proclo, pasando por el petrarquismo y el misticismo católico, hasta Leopardi), y el distanciamiento o la ironía del propio poeta con respecto al neoplatonismo.
