ASAL USUL NAMA TEMPAT DI DAERAH SIK, KEDAH

Abstract

Local history refers to the history of a particular district, sub-district, or village in a country. Although several studies have been written on places such as Kuala Lumpur, Klang, Tanjung Malim, Kampung Baru, Sabak Bernam, Muar, and Batu Pahat, the number of local history studies remains relatively small compared with the total number of districts, towns, sub-districts, and villages in Malaysia. Therefore, many areas of local history still need to be studied and documented. This study focuses on Sik District in Kedah, the largest district in the state, covering 1,635 square kilometres, or 17.35 per cent of Kedah’s total area. It is a preliminary study of the origins of the name Sik and selected village names in the district, based mainly on oral accounts from local residents. Oral history is used as an important method because it helps record past experiences, events, and information that remain preserved in individual memory. Data were collected through interviews with 10 respondents and through a review of written sources related to the history of selected villages in Sik. The research process involved three main stages: data collection, classification of information according to the selected villages, and data analysis. The findings show that the selected place names studied are still used today and are closely related to Sik’s geographical background, which is marked by extensive forested areas, the activities of the local community, and the pattern of village life. The origins of these place names reflect the relationship between people, the natural environment, and the social history of the local community. This study should be expanded to cover more places throughout Sik District, as many place names in the area have yet to be examined. Documenting oral sources is important because historical documents may remain permanently, but the individuals who experienced and remember historical events will not remain forever.
