Abstract

En este trabajo se realiza un análisis empírico comparado y multivariante con datos macro y micro de la incidencia del empleo temporal en 15 países de la OCDE a partir de datos de la propia OCDE, de EUROSTAT y de la octave ola del Panel de Hogares Europeos. Los resultados de este análisis permiten concluir que, contrariamente a lo que sostiene una buena parte de la literatura sociológica, la estructura productiva no es el principal factor explicativo de la alta tase de empleo temporal en España. Como alternativa, se contrasta el impacto de dos tipos de factores de oferte: la saturación demográfica y el diferencial educativo entre jóvenes y mayores. Tampoco ellos ofrecen una explicación adecuada y generalizable de la distribución del empleo temporal en los países analizados. Los factores institucionales, sin embargo, importan. Los análisis paramétricos muestran que tanto el grado de protección en el empleo establece como el grado de centralización coordinada del sistema de negociación colectiva tienen un efecto significativo sobre la distribución del empleo temporal en los países analizados. Sin embargo, estos factores institucionales no pueden explicar por si mismos por qué España presenta niveles de empleo tan extremos.
