Abstract

<p>En este libro se plantea una investigaci&oacute;n sumamente novedosa, basada en una minuciosa investigaci&oacute;n emp&iacute;rica, sobre un asunto que ha adquirido gran relevancia en los &uacute;ltimos a&ntilde;os: los trastornos alimentarios y sus condicionantes sociales y culturales. Desde una sofisticada perspectiva sociol&oacute;gica, se presta especial atenci&oacute;n a las relaciones de g&eacute;nero, a las diversas culturas de clase y a la relaci&oacute;n que la sociedad mantiene con el medio terap&eacute;utico. A lo largo de sus p&aacute;ginas se explora qu&eacute; se considera "trastorno alimentario", tanto por parte de los especialistas, como de las afectadas y de sus allegados. Adem&aacute;s, se reconstruye la cultura de la alimentaci&oacute;n de un grupo significativo de personas afectadas y de sus entornos familiares con el fin de analizar qu&eacute; razones sociales hacen que se comience a restringir la ingesta de alimentos y por qu&eacute;, como consecuencia de ello, se genera un conflicto con aquellos con los que se comparte la vida cotidiana. Por &uacute;ltimo, el libro se pregunta qu&eacute; pr&aacute;cticas sociales -entre ellas, aunque no s&oacute;lo, las terap&eacute;uticas- permiten superar los trastornos alimentarios y defenderse de las presiones corporales que emanan de los mercados de competencia corporal. El libro -y de ah&iacute; su t&iacute;tulo- plantea cuestiones importantes sobre los problemas filos&oacute;ficos de &eacute;tica y pol&iacute;tica del cuerpo, apoy&aacute;ndose en autores como Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Erving Goffman y Pierre Bourdieu.</p>
