The Effect of Penile Block Application on Pain Control in Cystoscopy

Abstract

Cystoscopy is a very effective diagnostic and follow-up method used during many urological procedures. Although the pain has decreased with the frequent use of the flexible cystoscope recently, it is a really uncomfortable method for some patients. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of penile block application on pain control during cystoscopy. In this study, the files of 157 male patients who underwent rigid cystoscopy for various reasons between March 2017 and June 2019 were retrospectively scanned. The patients were divided into two groups; those who underwent penile block and those who did not. A visual analog scale was used in all patients to evaluate pain levels. Group I contained 87 and Group II contained 70 patients. The mean pain score in Group I was higher (4.40±0.782) than that in Group II (1.84±0.681) this difference was statistically significant (p=0.032). The use of urethral lidocaine along with penile block has been shown to minimize pain during cystoscopy and increase the tolerability of this procedure.
