Abstract

A pesar de los recientes avances en el control de las enfermedades infecciosas, éstas siguen siendo en Guatemala la principal causa de morbilidad y mortalidad, particularmente en el área rural y urbana marginal. Por la gran diversidad biológica y cultural del país, se manifiesta un amplio uso tradicional de los recursos naturales para satisfacer las necesidades diarias de la población desde las épocas coloniales. Un ejemplo evidente de esto es la diversidad de especies vegetales usadas tradicionalmente para curar procesos infecciosos. El Departamento de Citohistología de la Facultad cuenta con las infraestructura especializada necesaria para cultivardiversos microorganismos patógenos y estudiar la actividad que los recursos naturales puedan tener sobre estos microorganismos con modernos bioensayos micrométricos. La investigación de la bioactividad de las plantas de uso medicinal permite validar el uso tradicional o popular, así como orientar las investigaciones posteriores. Esta información contribuye a caracterizar la bioactividad, elucidar la composición química y eventualmente difundir la información para socializar estos hallazgos apoyando el uso validado por la población y facilitando la formulación de productos fitoterápicos.
