Camelot is a laboratory problem in metamorphic petrology which is designed to simulate a research experience. The problem deals with data on scales ranging from a geologic map to hand specimens to thin sections. The map depicts a fold interference pattern due to two fold generations (F1 and F2). A third fold generation (F3) slightly modifies this pattern. Hand specimens illustrate these folds in their axial surface fabrics, such as schistosity (SI) and crenulation cleavage (S2 and S3). Hand specimens also show effects of progressive metamorphism on different lithologic units. The main objective of the problem, however, is to have the student do an analysis of metamorphic textures in thin sections. This analysis includes identifying metamorphic index minerals, locating their isograds on the map, and determining the timing of growth of these index minerals relative to the development of SI, S2 and S3 fabrics. The problem culminates in the writing of a geologic report which would be suitable for publication.
