Abstract

A densidade é conhecida como uma das principais propriedades físicas da madeira, por intervir diretamente na qualidade do material e por suas variações entre e dentre espécies e, até mesmo, na mesma árvore. Com isso, a presente pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar a densidade e teor de umidade da madeira de Ocotea pulchella (Nees) Mez no sentido longitudinal e suas alterações entre indivíduos. Para o desenvolvimento do trabalho foram abatidas nove árvores da respectiva espécie, provenientes do município de Três Passos localizado no estado do Rio do Grande Sul. Dessas foram retirados discos nas porções de 0, 25, 50, 75, 100% e DAP (1,30 m do solo) da altura total para a realização das análises de densidade e do teor de umidade. A madeira dessa espécie apresentou uma tendência de decréscimo, com algumas exceções, para as densidades estudadas no sentido longitudinal, comportamento contrário ao verificado para o teor de umidade. Não foram observadas diferenças estatísticas de densidade básica e densidade aparente seca ao ar entre os indivíduos estudados, já o teor de umidade e a densidade aparente saturada apresentaram alterações entre as árvores.
