Abstract

La toxicología de sustancias alucinógenas se sitúa dentro del amplio marco de estudio de la toxicología clínica, ciencia encargada del estudio de los efectos adversos de sustancias químicas en organismos vivos, especialmente humanos. La toxicología clínica evalúa desde intoxicaciones agudas hasta los efectos crónicos o subcrónicos de distintas sustancias, con una metodología específica que incluye desde el diagnóstico clínico hasta la prevención y tratamiento terapéutico de intoxicaciones (Roldán Reyes, 2016). Dentro de este ámbito, las sustancias alucinógenas han adquirido especial relevancia, debido a sus particulares efectos psicotrópicos que modifican profundamente la percepción de la realidad, generando imágenes, sonidos y sensaciones inexistentes, además de causar oscilaciones emocionales rápidas e intensas (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2003).
