Tomakomai silt loam was used in an experiment to determine pore-water pressures during soil freezing. The soil was packed in a plexiglas pipe which was 54 centimetres long and the column was instrumented with tensiometers and thermistors. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of the silt loam was measured by a method suggested by Klute.One end of the column was immersed in a bath of water. The depth to a water table could be varied by varying the pressure on the water phase, because freezing of the water in the tensiometer was necessary to estimate the pore-water pressures near the freezing front. Equations were developed for determining the pore-water pressures and the potential gradient near the freezing front from such pressures.To obtained equation for the pore-water pressure profile was given as the function of the distance from the ground water level. And it implies that the extreme drying zone in a soil-moisture profile was formed immediately below the freezing front. The estimated value of pore-water pressure at the freezing front was 1, 000 cmH2O (PF 3), which was obtained by intrapolation of observed values near the freezing front. The flux of water to the freezing front along the total potential gradient was also calculated on the basis of Richard's equation. And the calculated flux was approximately equal to the observed heaving rate.The proposed equation for the pore-water pressure profile of a freezing soil was applied to analysis of results of field experiments in Tomakomai.
