A proactive approach to the management of hyperbilirubinemia during phototherapy can help reduce mother-infant separation, maintain comfort of the newborn, reduce maternal anxiety and promote exclusive breastfeeding. Cyclic phototherapy can be part of such an approach, as it has been documented equally effective to continuous phototherapy for the treatment of neonatal jaundice, while possibly reducing the proven adverse effects of phototherapy.
