O livro de Flávio Gomes resulta de um trabalho excepcional de pesquisa em diversos arquivos brasileiros e de uma leitura muito ampla da bibliografia nacional e internacional a resistência escrava, seu assunto específico, e a escravidão negra em geral, temas acerca dos quais o autor já escreveu diversos e ótimos artigos, publicados em revistas especializadas.
