México y Cuba antes del 2000: comercio bilateral, inversión extranjera y asimetrías económicas

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las relaciones económicas entre México y Cuba antes del año 2000, con énfasis en el comercio internacional y la Inversión Extranjera Directa (IED), e identificar la trascendencia de dichos vínculos. Se plantea la interrogante sobre cómo influyeron las políticas de integración económica en la configuración de la relación bilateral. La hipótesis sostiene que esta relación estuvo marcada por una profunda asimetría: mientras México transitó hacia la apertura comercial y la firma del Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN), Cuba, tras la desaparición del bloque socialista, recurrió a la inversión extranjera como mecanismo de supervivencia económica. La metodología se basa en una revisión histórica y documental de fuentes académicas, informes e indicadores oficiales, que permite reconocer los principales hitos en las trayectorias económicas de ambos países y su interacción bilateral. Los resultados muestran que, aunque el comercio fue fluctuante, se mantuvo favorable a México; y que la inversión mexicana, aunque limitada, tuvo relevancia simbólica y estratégica al contribuir a la diversificación de socios de la isla. Se concluye que la integración económica entre países con modelos tan distintos exige no solo acuerdos formales, sino también voluntad política sostenida y complementariedad productiva.
