Sandon, Roe Green Barn, Roe Green: Interim Summary

Abstract

As the result of a condition on the planning permission for the construction of a stable block and manège with associated access track at Roe Green Barn, Sandon, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of monitoring and recording. The current project details the recording work carried out on the stable block and part of the access track only. The site lies within Area of Archaeological Significance No.198, which encompasses the medieval settlement of Roe Green. The footprint of the stable block and access track leading to it was reduced by 0.10-0.15m using a 360° tracked excavator fitted with a toothless ditching bucket, under close archaeological supervision. These groundworks removed the topsoil but did not penetrate the subsoil. The topsoil was a very dark greyish brown (10YR 3/2) sandy clay silt with very occasional sub-angular flint and chalk flecks. The subsoil was dark brown (10YR 3/3) sticky clay silt with moderate chalk and occasional brick fragments. No significant archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered in the course of this stage of the monitoring works. As the result of a condition on the planning permission for the construction of a stable block and manège with associated access track at Roe Green Barn, Sandon, Hertfordshire the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of monitoring and recording. This interim summary details the recording work carried out on the stable block and part of the access track only. The construction of the manège and the remainder of the access track linking it to the stable block has been postponed for the time being. The site lies within Area of Archaeological Significance No.198, which encompasses the medieval settlement of Roe Green. No significant archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered in the course of this stage of the monitoring works.
