A preliminary survey of the WWI Detention Centre near Sandwich, Kent, carried out by CITiZAN (Coastal and Intertidal Zone Archaeological Network). East Kent Coast Discovery Programme Lead Archaeologist/Project Officer Lara Band and CITiZAN volunteer Tijana Cvetkovic. The building was recorded using the CITiZAN app, through written notes and with photographs. The walls of the building were found to be sound. The condition of the roof has clearly deteriorated over the years and fixtures and fitting such as doors and electric lights have been totally or partially removed. Although some graffiti dating to the First World War has been removed some remains, in varying degrees of condition. There is also more recent graffiti throughout. The most obvious threat to the building is vegetation growth though visitor damage is a potential risk as well. A more detailed survey by CITiZAN volunteers is proposed, to create an Historic England Level 3 record for the building.
