In 2010, Archaeological Services and Consultancy excavated an area of middle Iron Age post-holes and pits located at the northern edge of the village of Caddington. The excavated evidence suggests that a settlement of this period was present, but its extent and form cannot be defined as a consequence of the small area examined. The post-holes and pits had been truncated by relatively recent ploughing and formed no definite structural alignments, and their function remains uncertain. However, artefacts recovered from one post-hole and one pit may have been present as the result of structured deposition. The results provide further evidence for widespread expansion of settlement onto the Chiltern clay plateau during this period, and increase the known distribution of this activity to the Caddington area.
